KryoShape - Frequently Asked Questions & the Answers

What’s the functional principle of fat freezing treatments with KryoShape? How does fat freezing work?

The fact that fatty tissue can be reduced by cold has been known for a while: in 1966, reports revealed that the cheek fat in children who consume large amounts of water ice regresses. In 1980 a study was published to verify the fact that cold impacts were able to reduce the fatty issue in the thighs of female equestrians.

An extended and controlled exposure to the cold (50 to 75 minutes, depending on the fat layer’s thickness) causes the fatty acids contained by the cells to crystallize. These fat cells thus forfeit their viability (so-called apoptosis). Other body cells like dermal and muscular cells are less sensitive to cold and are thus not affected by it.

Within the scope of a slow process, the dead fat cells are decomposed by endogenous cytophages. This will take 2 to 3 months. Consequently, the treatment’s final result will not be obvious before the respective time has passed by.

The individual steps in fat freezing:

The cooling plates

Step 1

The cooling plates are applied to the skin.

Step 2

The area treated is cooled for an hour within a controlled process.

Step 3

The fat contained by the fat cells crystallizes.

natural degradation process

Step 4

The fat cells affected emit signal communicating their non-viability. As a consequence, they are eliminated within the scope of a natural degradation process.

Who can fat freezing be applied to?

To all those who suffer from unwanted fat pads in the abdominal and hip area, on thighs and upper arms, or - in case of male patients - also from padding in the chest area (so-called gynecomastia), which can barely be reduced by dietary measures and physical activity. However, please note that fat freezing is no weight reduction measure.

What are the individual treatment steps?

fat pads are marked by lines

First of all, the fat pads are marked by lines and photos are taken of the respective areas.

fat pads will be pulled into a cooling device the respective area will be massaged

Then the fat pads will be pulled into a cooling device (similar to cupping glasses) by means of a vacuum and cooled for an hour. Thereafter, the respective area will be massaged.

Is the treatment painful?

When the fat pads are pulled in by the vacuum you might feel some kind of cold and/or pressure. However, this impression usually won’t last any longer than just a few minutes. The treatment does not require any (local) anesthesia.

After the treatment, you might feel slight pain in the respective area for a few days or even weeks. Temporary numbness or increased skin sensitivity have also been observed.

How long will it take until I can resume my normal activities after the treatment?

This procedure is not surgical. That means you will be able to resume your normal activities right after the treatment. This fact is one of the major advantages in fat freezing.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

A single treatment session will reduce about 25 to 30% of the fat volume exposed to the cold. Frequently, this reduction is perceived as sufficient. However, if so requested, additional treatments can be applied to same or a neighboring area to achieve an ideal result.

How long will it take until I see the results?

The fat is gently and slowly degraded within a period of up to three months. Consequently, it takes a little while and patience until the result of the treatment becomes obvious.

Are specific people excluded from the treatment?

Yes. If you experience any of the conditions below, the treatment cannot be applied on you:

  • individuals who over-react to cold, e.g. by so-called cryoglobulinemia or by cold agglutinins. Furthermore in cases of nocturnal cold hematuria and cold urticaria, which are extremely rare diseases;

  • pregnancy:

  • dermal diseases, inflammations and/or injuries/wounds in the area to be treated;

  • individual who suffer from extreme overweight and aspire weight reduction;

  • individual who suffer from inguinal hernia or laparocele or underwent surgery for this reason within the last year (this applies to treatments in the abdominal area only).

What unwanted side effects might occur?

After the treatment, the respective area might be slightly sclerotic and sensitive to pain, similar to having sore muscles. Frequently, patients experience dermal numbness or hypersensitivity that may last up to two months.

In rare cases, bruises have been observed. In extremely rare cases the line between treated and untreated tissue is clearly obvious.

How much will the treatment cost?

The treatment costs amount to CHF 690,00 per each treated area. If several areas are to be treated, we’ll grant you 10% discount on the total amount.

Details of the costs.
